After our Herpetological Research Experiences, we offered free follow-up experiences such as weekend trips to study herpetology in the mountains or the coast to conduct field work. We also took them to meetings of the NC Herpetological Society or to events where they helped teach the public about herps such as Reptile and Amphibian Day at the state museum. We considered the follow up days to be very important in broadening our participant’s understanding of herpetology, connecting them to each other and to nature, and helping them take on science identities.
Transportation was provided to some of the events. This was important in getting participation from underserved participants since transportation is difficult for youth whose parents work several jobs, have only one car, etc.
