A student gently pulling the dewlap on an anole to determine the sex of the anole. The large and bright dewlap indicates that the anole is a male. In North Carolina, only anoles have colored dewlaps. However, during mating seasons, coloration variations are also seen in Eastern fence lizards (males will have bright blue markings on their throats and bellies) and Broadhead skinks (males will have reddish orange heads).
